Hair Loss Q&A

What causes hair loss?

Many factors can increase your risk of hair loss. While some people naturally have thinning locks due to family history, others lose their hair rapidly from hormonal deficiencies. Determining the cause of hair loss is the first step in treating it.

Some of the most common causes of hair loss are:

Hormones play a critical role in hair maintenance. When your hormones aren’t balanced, dry, thinning hair can develop. Pregnancy and menopause are two well-known conditions that cause hormonal hair loss, but low testosterone (low T) is prevalent in men.

Also called androgenic alopecia, male-pattern and female-pattern hair loss are highly common with age. It usually occurs over time and runs in families. Women tend to experience hair loss around the scalp, while men lose theirs in patches.

Stress may lead to patchy hair loss, causing it to fall out in clumps when combing your hair. Most stress-related hair loss isn’t permanent, but early intervention can help accelerate your recovery.

Many medications can lead to temporary hair loss, including those for cancer and autoimmune diseases. Your hair may be thinner and take longer than usual to grow back even after you stop taking these medications.

What is the LaserCap for hair loss?

The LaserCap uses low-level laser light therapy to stimulate hair growth non-invasively. The treatment targets hair follicles with laser energy to:

Hair restoration treatment is ideal for patients with a family history of hair loss or underlying medical conditions. The LaserCap can be a stand-alone treatment or complement an existing regimen that includes medications, supplements, or topical ointments as well as  Platelet-rich plasma (“PRP”) injections and/or microneedling.

What is PRP Hair Treatment?

PRP or Platelet-rich plasma is an injection treatment whereby a person’s own blood is used. When PRP is injected into the damaged area it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade.  As the platelets orangize in the treatment area they release a number of enzymes to promote healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells and growth factors to repair the damaged area. As a result, new collagen begins to develop. As the collagen matures, it begins to shrink causing the tightening and strengthening of the damaged area.

What can I expect from hair loss treatment?

Most hair loss treatments are fast and painless. LaserCap therapy typically takes only 30 minutes per session. The cap can be purchased and done in the privacy of your home.

PRP treatments  are scheduled in the office for about an hour.  Patients return for about three treatments to achieve lasting results. The team may combine your therapy with other hair restoration treatments to accelerate new growth.
