Sinus Problems Q&A

What are sinus problems?

The sinuses are four empty cavities in your upper face. You have four pairs of sinuses, with eight total. While the sphenoid and two ethmoid sinuses sit between your eyes and nose, the maxillary sinuses are below your eyes. They primarily produce mucus that drains out of your nose, ensuring it remains free of bacteria.

Sinus problems occur when these hollow cavities fill with fluid. The sinuses can become inflamed and block the healthy flow of mucus. You may feel congested, groggy, or experience headaches when you have blocked sinuses.

Are there different types of sinus problems?

There are several types of sinus problems that can affect your ability to breathe comfortably, including:

Sinusitis occurs when the sinus cavities become inflamed and fill with fluid. Swollen tissue, nasal polyps, and infections are the most common causes of chronic and recurrent sinusitis.

Nasal polyps are noncancerous growths that develop in the lining of the nasal passages. While usually harmless, these small growths can cause a stuffy, runny nose.

Chronic nasal or sinus congestion can lead to a runny nose, often postnasal drip, coughing, itching, and sneezing. While some symptoms stem from seasonal allergies, symptoms from chronic rhinitis may occur all year.

If you have a persistently runny nose, nasal polyps, allergies, or chronic sinusitis may be to blame.

The Advanced Specialty Associates team performs diagnostic testing to determine the cause of your sinus problems and recommend the proper treatment.
